Reflections on the Group Writing Project

Miscellaneous Blog Tips 37 comments

A few people have been asking me to write a post summarizing the benefits of running last week’s ‘Top 5′ group writing project (GWP).

I’d summarize it as being worth doing in five main areas (and will add a few ‘costs’ of doing it below also):

1. Participation

The main reason that I run GWP’s is that it gets current readers participating in the blog. While there’s already a pretty good level of interaction on the blog in comments I find that a special opportunity like GWPs draws people who might previously have been lurking into coming out openly as Active readers. I find that the number of comments in the weeks following a GWP are usually higher than in the weeks before - so it does seem to impact the interActive culture of a blog. I find that with increased participation comes increased ownership from readers.

2. New Readers

There’s no doubt that this last GWP created a buzz around the blogosphere. In doing this I find that they put the name/brand of enternetusers ‘out there’ in ways that it might not have been previously and as a result every time I run one I seem to find new readers. While I don’t require people to mention that they’re in the project on their post - most do and in doing so they give those readers who also have blogs a way of discovering my blog.

Hint - What I’ve found when running GWPs is that you need to work hard to convert some of the new readers into loyal readers. Don’t let every post in the week that you run this type of thing relate to the project but work hard to provide excellent content that will make those discovering your blog for the first time want to hang around for more (and content that will keep your current loyal readers interested of course). There is a danger in running this sort of project that you become obsessed with it and ignore your current readers (and run the risk of losing them).

3. Incoming links

Related to this is the numbers of new links pointing at enternetusers. I have not counted how many blogs linked up to enternetusers and the GWP this week but I would suspect that there were well over 1000 (and probably closer to 2000 as many linked up numerous times over the week). Now people will argue over the benefits of so many links coming into a single page (or just a few) so quickly in terms of SEO - but the main reason that these links are so great is that they bring new readers with them.

NB: I’ve been told by some SEO types that my daily posts are risky to my blog when it comes to SEO also because they have so many links on them. I understand this but am more than willing to run that risk because I think the benefits of running GWPs far outweigh the costs - both to me and those participating.

4. ‘Happy Readers’

I’ve lost count of the numbers of emails that I’ve had in the last week from readers thanking me for a range of things that have come out of participating. These have included:

  • finding new readers for their blogs
  • big traffic days (from direct traffic from the GWP)
  • big traffic from social bookmarking (quite a few participants seemed to get on Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon etc)
  • lots of comments (a number of readers reported having more comments on their posts than they’ve ever had on a post)
  • new rss subscribers
  • new ideas for posts
  • discovering new blogs to read/subscribe to

The list could go on (and the emails keep coming in). This is probably the best part of GWPs - new readers are great, but happy readers are even better. When you help someone you find they advocate for you, promote you and keep coming back for more. It is also very energizing and encouraging to get these emails on a personal level.

5. Traffic

It is difficult to quantify the actual traffic that this latest GWP brought into enternetusers. It was made harder to gauge because in the same week I was also on the front page of Digg and Delicious for one of my ‘creativity’ posts. There has definitely been an impact though on traffic (I’ve also noticed an increase in the length of time that people are staying on enternetusers per visit this week).

A couple of graphs:
I’m a bit of a graph junkie - before I move onto the costs of GWPs here are a few that might interest others who are more visual:

This first one measure the amount of posts in the blogosphere over the last two months with the words ‘top 5′ in them - via blogpulse.

This one measures the number of posts in the blogosphere over the last two months with ‘enternetusers.net’ in them (incoming links) - via blogpulse.

This one graphs mentions of ‘enternetusers’ over the last 90 days - tracked by Technorati.

Lastly - an Alexa graph measuring traffic. It shows some increase (although this was probably more to do with a good two days on Digg.

Costs of the GWP

While there are some obvious benefits of doing a project like this there are also a few costs (some obvious and some more hidden). To give a little balance to this post here are a few of the costs that I’ve observed of this last GWP.

1. Time

Perhaps the biggest cost of these projects is the time that it takes to put them together. This time around was easier due to the plugin that Gary put together for me to help automate it - however administering something with so many people contributing does take significant time and energy.

2. SEO Costs?

I’ve already mentioned this in passing - but while there are some potential gains with having so many blogs point links at the GWP there are also potential risks to this blog in having so many links pointing out from it. I also do wonder whether having so many inbound links appear so quickly will have costs also as it seems so unnatural to Google’s bots.

3. Server Load

There were a few times when the project tested the back end of enternetusers - particularly on the two days when the blog was also being Dugg. Thanks to the great tech team at b5 we got through that without too many problems.

4. Reader Distraction

The thing that worries me most about these projects is that they can be a little distracting from the main focus of the blog. While I actually run these projects to give people a little inspiration to write something that might improve their blog or bring it a little life (which does fit with the main purpose of this blog) it can be a little distracting also and I try to balance this with other on topic posts.

Top 5 - GWP Winner (and the #1 Reason Why Chitika Rocks)

enternetusers Site News 82 comments

OK, after a good night’s sleep an hour or two working through the list to weed out a couple of little problems I’ve just selected a winner for the Top 5 Group Writing Project. Before I announce them - here are a few administrative notes:

  • Full List - For those wanting to see the full list in the one place I’ve just put together a compilation page of all 893 entries at Top 5 Group Writing Project Final Submission List. Please keep surfing it, linking up (I think some top 5 favorites would be appropriate) and making friends of those bloggers you find.
  • Duplicate Entries - A few people misread (or didn’t read) the rules properly and there were a few who submitted multiple entries. I’ve left them in the list but have only allowed their first entry to be eligible for the prize.
  • Late Entries - There have been a few of these - but unfortunately I can’t keep adding new entries to the list. You’re welcome to keep writing Top 5 posts - but they won’t be listed any more - sorry.

Before I announce the Winner - I want to complete my own little Top 5 project - the top five reasons why I think Chitika Rocks.

#5 - On Day 1 I told you that they were interActive ads and very clickable
#4 - On Day 2 I told you about their RPU (related product units) and why they’re cool.
#3 - On Day 3 I told you about their free BlogBash ebook which is filled with great blogging tips
#2 - On Day 4 I told you about eMiniMalls

#1 Reason Why Chitika Rocks

The reason why Chitika Rocks the most can perhaps be summarized best with a little screen shot of the log in page of my Chitika account where they very kindly remind me each time I log in how much money I’ve earned by using them. Here’s what it looks like:

Chitika Earnings

That amount doesn’t include April’s earnings (and goes back to when I started to use them in September 2005) - but when they do update it that figure will go past quarter of a million dollars. What else can I really say? I think Chitika Rocks (and who wouldn’t)!

Thanks again to Chitika for putting up the prize for this project.

The Winner of the Project

Before I announce the winner - let me say that there are many deserving winners this week - I hope that participants have been ‘rewarded’ with a little extra traffic (and for those of you who were featured on Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon with your entries a lot of extra traffic).

However there is only one winner and that winner relies completely upon luck as this is a random prize draw.

And that Winner is……

Nancy R. Callahan for her entry Baby names from Video Games.

Congratulations Nancy - I’ll be in touch with you shortly to arrange for $1001 cash to be sent to you from Chitika. Thanks for your entry.

And thanks to everyone for participating! I’ll hoping we can do one of these projects per month from now on in. Feel free to nominate topics below.

Top 5 - Group Writing Project Day 4

enternetusers Site News 63 comments

Top-5It is with great pleasure, mixed with sadness, mixed with a tinge of excitement and mixed with some relief that I now officially close the ‘Top 5′ enternetusers Group Writing project for this week. No more submissions will be accepted.

To say that the project has been a success would be something of an understatement both on a personal front, a participant front (looking at the numbers of thank you emails that are in my inbox) and from a sponsor’s point of view (if Alden from Chitika’s message to me a few hours is anything to go by).

Today saw the biggest round of submissions for the week with 297 new entries. This takes the week’s total up to 893 (almost triple our previous record). I’m not sure if it was the topic, the prize or luck (or all three) that made this week so successful - but I want to thank everyone for participating by submitting entries and by linking up to those that you love the most. I especially want to thank two important participants in the project.

Thanks Gary

The reason there was such a long gab between this writing project and the last one is that previously running these projects has been so much work as I’ve had to manually copy and paste every entry from emails into posts. This time however I was lucky enough to have Gary King develop a WP plugin that would do the task for me so that all I had to do at the end of each day was copy and paste the list of submissions into a post with my intro. Seeing the numbers of entries we had confirms the decision to go this route - Gary has literally saved me days worth of work. Thanks Mate.

Thanks Chitika - Why They Rock #2

Thanks to the sponsors of this project - Chitika. The #2 reason why I like Chitika as a monetization option for blogs is eMiniMalls. While they have developed a nice array of ad units for blogs it’s one of their first - the eMiniMall that makes me the majority of my Chitika income.

If you’ve not seen one before here’s an example.

These units are highly configurable, very clickable and can payout quite well if you choose the right keywords to target (hint: the more related to your content and audience demographic the better).

Stay tuned for my #1 reason for loving Chitika - it’s going to be a good one!

The Prize

I’m going to post the final list of submissions below and then will post the prize winner in a post tomorrow. The reason for this is that I need to double check that I’ve got everyone’s submissions (one or two slipped through in the changeover between days and there are a few double ups that I need to weed out). This will ensure the winner is drawn fairly. I’ll also post a full list of all entries tomorrow as one list - just so you’ve got them all in the one place for something to do over the weekend!

Today’s Submissions

Well it’s time for the final list of today’s submissions. As I say - there’s a lot of them and once again they are on every topic under the sun. I hope you enjoy reading them, commenting on them and linking up to the ones you love the most.

Once again - the prize and full list of those participating will be posted tomorrow. But now after a long week - I’ve got one last ‘Top 5′….

1. Hot Chocolate Made
2. Electric Blanket On
3. Pajamas On
4. Bed
5. ZZZZZZZZZ

Just a short note to say that this week’s ‘Top 5′ writing project is officially over.

The ending of the project coincides with me being out with friends - so I’ll post the final list of today’s submissions later tonight. The prize winner will be announced tomorrow (as I want to double check that everything is accurate before doing so).

Stay tuned and thanks to everyone for participating - it’s been a great project!

Bravisa - Another Online Shop

Miscellaneous Blog Tips 11 comments

Bravisa LogoIn the last 12 months there has been a lot of activity in the online shop space. We’ve seen Chitika’s Shoplincs, Zlio and Amazon’s aStore.

I’ve personally used each of the three and have only had any real success with Shoplincs.

So today when another shop service came onto my radar - Bravisa - I wasn’t overly excited. But to be fair they are a little different (or seem to be) from the others above in that they seem to have direct links with manufacturers of products.

I’m yet to test Bravisa (how many shops can a blogger use!) but they seem to offer a nice range of products in a range of areas (from Pet Products, to Health and Beauty to Clothing) and could therefore be a good fit for some niche blogs who are struggling to find a monetization stream that fits with their topic.

The revenue model is similar to retail - the manufacturer names their price - you add a markup and Bravisa takes a 10% commission from your markup for providing you with the shop and back end (they handle all the payment system etc).

All looks good with Bravisa - however I’m probably not going to test it personally because of my previous experience with shops (and the fact that I’m happy with the one that’s working for me). However if you try it - give us a shout with a review in comments below to let us know how you find the service and features.

Giving Underperforming Posts a Second Chance with Updates

Writing Content 24 comments

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again….

Have you ever written a post that you thought would hit the spot with your readers, generate lots of interest and/or stimulate a great conversation and then find it fell flat on it’s face?

I have - in fact it happens all the time for a variety of reasons:

  • Sometimes your posts fall over because other stories break in the blogosphere and hog all the attention
  • Perhaps you just had some bad luck and the right influential blogger didn’t happen to see your post (and spread the word)
  • At other times its because you posted on the wrong day of the week
  • Or perhaps you wrote the post in the early days of your blog before you really had any readers to read it
  • Alternatively it can be simply that your post wasn’t good enough

Many of these unsuccessful posts slide off the front page of a blog never to be seen or thought about again (by your readers or by you) - however, perhaps in time, they deserve a second chance. After all, you’ve put work into researching and writing them and with a second chance in the spotlight they could actually reach their potential and become more fruitful and rewarding to you as a blogger.

Over the last few weeks I’ve experimented on a number of occasions with giving old posts that I felt hadn’t lived up to their potential a second chance. I’ve done this in a few different ways with varying degrees of success but wanted to share the method that was most successful for me (as well as a few others at the end of this post).

Reposted Update

The most successful of my experiments with giving old posts a second chance have been reposting them on the front page of a blog with updates.

I did this a few days back with a post on DPS on Slow Sync Flash. The previous version of the post had been posted back in January when my readership was considerably smaller than it currently is (ie most of my current readers wouldn’t have seen it before) and while it had been moderately successful in terms of generating comments I was never completely satisfied with the post (in terms of what I’d written and/or the traffic it got).

So I updated the post with a few tweaks that made it more useful, attrActive and relevant and reposted it at the top of my blog (simply by changing the posting date in WordPress). I also included a note that it was an updated post at the end of the post.

IMPORTANT NOTE - I am able to do this at DPS because I have a permalink structure that does not include dates (ie it is just the BlogName/PostName not BlogName/Date/PostName as it is here at enternetusers. if you have dates in your permalink structure you shouldn’t use this method as you’ll end up with a new URL for the post which can mean you lose any SEO ranking your previous version of the post had.

The results of this updated repost were significant with a front page appearance on Digg, large StumbleUpon traffic, being featured on the front page of Delicious and link ups from many blogs including a few authoritative ones.

The advantage of this method is that the post not only gets a second chance in the spotlight - but because it’s an established post with some Search Engine Ranking - the combination of the content being updated and new comments being added (SE’s like fresh content), the appearance on your front page and the extra links that the post might generate means that the post will build it’s SEO authority.

The danger of this approach is that if you do it too often with posts that most of your readers will have seen before you run the risk of them becoming disillusioned with you. I don’t have a problem with updating old posts to make them more relevant and useful - but some of your readers might get a bit sick of reading the same old stuff if you do it too often.

This approach works best on evergreen or timeless posts - particularly ‘how to’ or ‘tips’ posts.

Other ways of updating content and giving it a second chance

The reposted update is something that has worked very well for me on a number of occasions. However there are other ways to give an older post a second chance including:

  • Complete Rewrite as a new post - in this approach you simply take the concepts from your previous post and rewrite it from scratch as a new post on the blog. You might make the same posts, update some of your thoughts, add new points etc but end up with two posts on the same topic. I’ve used this approach with some success also. I would generally link back to the previous version so readers can see the progression of my ideas.
  • Update Posts and Link to them - another approach is to update an older post and then write a new post announcing the update with a link to it. This doesn’t tend to work quite as well for some reason - perhaps because the old post still has your old date on it and can be seen as ‘dated’ by many (it’s amazing how people write off old material as being not current or old for just being written a few months back).
  • Archive Compilations - posts that look back at a year gone by and that link to old posts can also be another way of driving people back into your archives for a second look. I tend to do this on special occasions (blog anniversaries, the end of the year etc). It is a gentle way of reminding new readers that there is more to your blog than what they might have seen.
  • Prominent Links to Key Posts - linking to old key posts in side bars, headers, posts or even as ‘related posts’ under your posts can be ways of giving old posts a second breath of life. This is by no means as radical as reposting an old post - but over time this can drive significant traffic back to an older underperforming post.
  • Promoting Old Posts to Other Sites - this is something I’ve had some success with also - but quite accidentally. A month back I noticed a spike in the traffic coming to DPS from Digg. I immediately thought that one of my most recent posts was the one bringing in the traffic - however when I checked out where the traffic was heading I realized it was to a post that was 9 months old. One of my readers had stumbled across it and had thought it digg worthy. Others had jumped on board and as a stroke of luck and with no work on my part I had a hit on my hands as it went to the front page. It struck me at this point that perhaps my archives held other old posts that had not been promoted to other larger sites. As a result I submitted a couple of older posts to a couple of large blogs and to my amazement they were picked up and linked to. I should note that one of the main reasons that I suspect this works on DPS is that I don’t time stamp my posts. I’ve written more on this practice previously (it’s something that will again suit evergreen timeless content more than blogs that are newsy and whose posts need the context of a date to be useful to readers).

So do you update posts? If so how do you do it and have you had any success with doing so?

Blog Bash 07 - More details of New York Bloggers Day

enternetusers Site News 16 comments

I’m happy to announce some further details of the enternetusers/b5media Blog Training Day and Meetup in New York that I’ve previously mentioned.

Name - ‘Blog Bash 07′
Date - 9 June
Times - 10am - 4.30pm for training and from 7pm til late for a Networking Meetup
Price - $100 USD or $75 early bird discount (includes the party) - We need to confirm a price for those wanting to just come for the Party.
Place - DoubleTree Metropolitan Hotel (569 Lexington Ave NY)

The day’s events are shaping up to be pretty fun and informative. Here’s more on what’s happening, what’s included in the price, who will benefit from coming, why we’ve priced it this way and more.

Content

I’ve already secured Brian Clark of CopyBlogger fame to do a session on his specialty (copy writing). We’re also pulling together a line up of experts in everything from Building Traffic, to Blog Technology, to Advertising on Blogs, to blogging with podcasts and video through to blog platforms.

We’re also going to give those attending the chance to vote on a few other topics that they’d like to be covered. Some potential topics might include:

  • SEO
  • Networking/Relational Blogging
  • Beating Bloggers Block
  • Blogging for Business
  • Marketing Your Blog
  • Legal Issues facing Bloggers
  • Blog Networks

Speakers will be a mixture of b5media’s team (including myself - I’ll be keynoting) and other experts.

The day will be fairly relaxed - with a mixture of keynotes, panels and conversational sessions. We’ll be running two rooms so there will always be a choice of who you want to listen to and there will also be a spill out room for networking.

What’s included?

For your $100 (or $75 if you’re an early bird) you’ll get entry to all the sessions (5 or 6 out of a choice of 10 or 12 - as there will be two sessions on at all times), entry into the party (where you’ll get a complimentary drink and some nibbles) plus afternoon snacks will be provided. To keep the cost down we haven’t included lunch (BYO or hit the streets to grab something).

Who is this For?

This idea emerged out of the last enternetusers Meetup in New York where 80 or so bloggers got together for drinks. It was such a fun night, I got asked so many great questions and there were so many requests to do it again that we thought to extend it would be both fun and useful on two fronts:

  1. Training - This is an event for bloggers of all stages in their journey. We’re putting together a range of topics that will hopefully be accessible for beginners (and even PreBloggers) through to more experienced bloggers.
  2. Networking - This will be a time of great networking - we have a space specifically set aside for this and have scheduled an hour long lunch break as well as an afternoon break for you to meet other bloggers. The time between the end of the training and the party (as well as the party itself) will be great chances to meet and greet your fellow bloggers.

More on the Price

We’ve tried to keep the price down as much as possible and have chosen to charge just $100 for the full day and night to make it as accessible as possible while also trying to make the event break even.

The price is a little higher than we’d anticipated and hoped for but hotel costs in NYC were a little higher than we’d planned for.

We’ve already talked to potential sponsors for the event who will offset some of the costs. If you’d like to be involved in this way please do get in touch - we’ll make it worth your while.

The Party

The evening is going to be FUN. No speaker and no long speeches (unless Jeremy drinks too much). You’ll get a complimentary drink on entry and some light snacks - after which it’ll be a cash bar.

If you can’t get to the day of training but want to come along for the party then we’ll be happy to have you along. We are still finalizing whether there will be any cost to those doing this.

Bookings

There is a limited capacity for this event so it’ll be a first in first served thing and booking will be required (stay tuned for how to book). We are currently setting up a site where you can do this but wanted to get these details to you as soon as possible so you can block out this day in your diary and plan to be there.

We know of people who are flying in for this (last time there were quite a few) and anticipate a fairly full room so take advantage of the Early Bird discount when the site goes live next week.

Top 5 - Group Writing Project Day 3

enternetusers Site News 61 comments

Top-5
Today’s Submissions to this week’s enternetusers Group Writing Project have again blown me away (and proved to be quite a distraction for blogging, eating…. and getting out of my PJs!). In today’s batch there were 222 taking total participants in the project up to 596!

There’s still time to enter the project - with around 24 hours until your time is up (I’ll cut off acceptance of entries when the clock strikes midnight in Honalulu (which I think is pretty close to being the last place to see the day). To be included in the last day’s submissions and go in the running for the $1001 cash prize simply follow the process outlined in this post.

Why Chitika Rocks #3

Continuing my mini series on why Chitika, our sponsor of this project, rocks today I want to talk about another of their products - their new free BlogBash ebook. This is a collection of blog tips from 30 blog experts written over the month of April.

Submissions in this free resource are on a wide range of topics and contain some really excellent advice from bloggers like Chris Pirillo, Monolo, Joel Comm, Jeremy Wright, Neil Patel, Aaron Wall, Andy Merrett, Liz Strauss, Wendy Piersall and even one from me.

It’s well worth a look.

Day 3 Submissions

Once again you’ll want to equip yourself with some snacks and a drink to tackle this list. Having already surfed most of it today I can tell you that there are all kinds of posts in the list. I laughed, I shook my head, I nodded in agreement, I shook my head in wonder and I added a few blogs to my RSS reader (and once or twice did all of that on the one blog).

I hope you enjoy today’s submissions as much as I have. Don’t forget to link up to them, leave comments, subscribe to feeds and do a little bookmarking with those posts that resonate with you the most.
